Octopus Paul is a two year-old octopus. He was born in England but has been living in Sea Life aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany. Paul is interested by the world due to accurately predict Germany's chances in the FIFA World Cup 2010. Many famous sport world reports have been reporting about 100% right results of Germany's match in his predictions.
During the FIFA World Cup 2010, Paul has been predicting Germany's results with uncanny accuracy at the Oberhausen sea life centre by plucking mussels with certain national flags out of his tank.
For Germany vs English match, the octopus made a streaky decision to swim straight over Germany tank and pick over his native country, ignore the England flag container. It took him about an hour to approach a water glass containing a mussel marked with a German flag. That mean a German team win over England team in last-16 match at the FIFA World Cup 2010.
Once again, Octopus Paul, who became a global celebrity after correctly predicting all four of Germany’s games in tournament 2010, indicated that Germany vs Argentina game will be a very tough battle and that it may even end in a penalty shootout but finally Germany will win. The reason is Paul hesitated but finally he picked Germany to win again over Argentina in quarterfinal match.
At the beginning, Paul was given the choice of picking seafood goodie from two different boxes lowered into his tank, one box decorated with an Argentine flag on it and the other with a German flag. The first box that Paul opens is considered to be his forecasted winner.
Even after Paul opened the Germany box, he kept staring it cautiously. However, he spent time about 45 minutes for making decision before jumped inside the German box finally, ignored a similar box with Argentina’s flag and grabbed the seafood goodie with his tentacles to gulp down.
Despite being a naturalized German, Octopus Paul is an unbiased oracle. It could show on his previous predictions. For example; during the group stages, he sit in the Serbia box, not German box, when he was asked to foretell the result of the match between German and Serbia. Not only German, but the world was shocked by him when Serbia defeated Germany by score 1-0. Moreover, he also foretold the German victories over Australia and Ghana.
In the past, Octopus Paul has proven to be a reliable oracle - he predicted 80 percent of all German games right at the 2008 European Championship.
